Native Americans are believed to be first inhabitants of Sioux Falls. They occupied the city at least 1,500 years ago. In 1856 and 1857, people from the territory of Minnesota and Iowa visited and inhabited the falls and laid out several sites in the town. The re-establishment of Sioux Falls accounted for metamorphosis of the town into the county seat of Minnehaha County in 1868. In 1878, the city witnessed its first railroad system. By 1890, Sioux Falls became the largest city in South Dakota and continues to be the same. Sioux Falls' economy has always been backed by agriculture. For most of the 20th century, the John Morrell and Company had been the most prominent employer in the city. With the commencement of the 1980s, The city attempted to diversified and expanded its economy. During this time period, myriads of financial institutions made their presence in the city. The city also experienced the expansion of hospitals witnessed their transformation into medical centers. By the end of the era, a computer technology company, i.e., Hutchinson Technology arrived in the city.
